Peter McCarthy founded MorningStar Mission in 1909 because of the great need he saw to feed and house the less fortunate. This ministry has carried on throughout the years.
MorningStar Mission is the only agency that provides three hot meals a day to the homeless and needy in Will County. In 2007 the Mission served 135,341 meals. MorningStar has often been the first to see a need and fill it. MorningStar was one of the first agencies in town to provide emergency shelter to homeless families. Sadly, though, when the Mission moved to its present site, because of a fire we had to find a new location in Joliet.
The Mission has accomplished much over the years. Not only does the Mission provide three hot meals a day and emergency shelter, we are also the only long-term residential rehabilitation program for men in Joliet. The Mission has developed an over-all ministry that purposes to minister to men from the day they come in the doors homeless, looking for food and emergency shelter, until they complete the rehabilitation, then the transitional program, and are able to successfully live independently.
The Mission also ministers to women and families through its many Community Outreach services. These include our Jump on the Bus school supply program; Easter,
Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets; Stars of Hope Christmas gift program; emergency food, clothing and furniture vouchers; our meals; our intensive outpatient treatment for women; and the Advance Housing Program.
